Job Description:

Position Summary : In accordance with the mission, vision and values of HealthSource Saginaw and any applicable federal, state and/or regulatory statues/guidelines, the Nurse Manager plans, implements, and evaluates delivery of overall nursing care to patients as well as provides managerial support in conjunction with the Program Executive through supervision and evaluation of all nursing personnel on the unit(s). This role will operate within the objectives of HealthSource Saginaw, the Michigan Public Health Code, and the practice of nursing as indicated within the code and assures that effective nursing services are provided with quality standards being met. This position reports to the Director of Nursing/Nurse Executive.

Key Duties and Responsibilities :


  • Responsible and available for twenty-four hour care, safety and management for all patients on a hospital-level unit(s) through coordinating the development, implementation and evaluation of the nursing regimen, promotion of safety practices, employee direction, and supervision.
  • Confer with physicians, other professionals, and other departments for provisions of total care.
  • Ensure unit activities and records adhere to regulatory requirements of Joint Commission, CMS, MDCH, and other accrediting/regulatory agencies for patient care and results-oriented documentation.
  • Responsible for ongoing Performance Improvement activities for the unit(s). Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and nursing services, analyzing appropriate internal and external data and information to identify and implement opportunities for improving services and patient outcomes. Report to the Hospital Performance Improvement Council.
  • Serve as a role model for staff. Adhere to established hospital and department guidelines and protocols. Supports hospital mission, vision and values.
  • Develop and review policies for the unit(s) in conjunction with Director of Nursing and Program Executive.
  • Initiate and enforce the development, maintenance, and interpretation of standards of nursing practice to ensure safe, therapeutically effective nursing care. Promote research and integrating evidence-based knowledge into the identification of best practice in the delivery of nursing care to the appropriate population.
  • Available twenty-four hours (24) as resource person to unit staff.
  • Promulgate the established philosophy and objectives of HealthSource Saginaw and the nursing department.
  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for assigned unit(s).
  • Interpret legal nursing responsibilities as indicated by facility and Nursing Policies, Michigan Public Health Code, and the Practice of Nursing as indicated in the Code.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring in clinical area(s) in developing staff to meet competency/certification/credentialing/advanced education in specialty of the unit.
  • Oversee compliance of staff to infection control practices and mandatory education requirements.
  • Comply with the code of ethics for nurses.
  • Responsible for assisting with budget development and monitoring. Operate within approved unit budgets. Submit budgets and budget reports as directed. Ensure availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies for patient care.
  • Responsible for nursing employees on own unit(s) through:

    a) Interviewing and hiring of qualified nursing staff for the unit(s).

    b) Ensuring (scheduling) sufficient nursing personnel to provide for patient care needs in keeping with appropriate regulatory requirements and staffing plan.

    c) Providing orientation, including nurse preceptor program, and evaluation of new employees.

    d) Monitoring nursing personnel performance on a continuous basis. Interceding when indicated and according to patient care standards and nursing practice guidelines.

    e) Initiating counseling, providing written performance evaluations and initiating disciplinary action per policy and procedure.

    f) Evaluating and providing for staff education, as well as developing unit specific competencies for nursing staff.

    g) Maintaining good communication with staff (individually and in groups).


    • Develop and implement patient care standards for designated unit(s).
    • Conduct rounds to evaluate effectiveness of care delivery and performance of subordinates to assure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and practice standards as well as assuring safe, quality patient care.
    • Lead or participate on assigned hospital and/or department committees and attends assigned management meetings. The White Pine Adult/Adolescent Unit Nurse Managers are also responsible for the Pathways Chemical Dependency Unit.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Executive and/or Director of Nursing.
    • Compliance with mandatory overtime required when necessary.
    • Regular and punctual attendance is required.

      Education/Experience :

      • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and holding a current license to practice nursing in the State of Michigan as a registered nurse.
      • Possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred. Consideration will be given to a bachelor's degree in another health-related field.
      • Three to five years clinical experience related to specific area(s) of this position.
      • Has knowledge of Federal, State and other regulatory agencies pertinent to clinical area(s). Experience in some area of management preferred.
      • Approved CPR certification

        Skills/Abilities :

        • Possess knowledge of principles and practices of effective employee supervision, development, and evaluation.
        • Possess high level of interpersonal skills and understand concepts of excellence in customer service to conduct duties in a positive, customer-friendly manner with all customers of the department, particularly patients, visitors, physicians and other employees.
        • Strong Leadership skills.
        • Strong skills in all forms of communication and work well with others in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.
        • Must possess nursing knowledge necessary for effective formulation of patient care plans for patients in unstable condition, implementation of care and appropriate documentation of pertinent information regarding patient's condition and patient outcome.
        • Work requires the analytical ability to identify problems, plan for their resolution, implement change, monitor or perform data collection and evaluate outcomes.
        • Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development through continuing education, committee work, etc., maintaining education and development appropriate for the position.
        • The Nurse Manager must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit(s).
        • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/department's policies and procedures.
        • Skilled in Microsoft Office applications. Previous Electronic Medical Record experience preferred but not required.

          Working Conditions:

          • Walks, sits, stands, bends, lifts (no more than 50 pounds), and move throughout the facility during the work day.
          • Must be able to speak the English language and possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetic devices that will enable these senses to function in a manner to ensure that the requirements of this position as noted herein are fully met.
          • Must be flexible with schedule/hours of work.
