Overview

THE MISSION OF THE SALVATION ARMY

Objective: The Social Service Director supervises and administrates The Salvation Army's Social Services ministries and staff throughout Saginaw County in accordance with Salvation Army policies and procedures, working to meet the established objectives and goals in support of and to promote, increase, and fulfill the ministry and mission of The Salvation Army

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide quality client services to meet clients' basic or emergency needs and further clients' well-being in accordance with the mission of The Salvation Army:

a. Conduct intake and all subsequent client interviews to determine and evaluate clients' needs for the purpose of recommending action toward a resolution of clients' problems. Assist clients with development of personal plans to prevent recurrence of emergencies

b. Provide clients with the information and material assistance needed to respond to immediate emergencies and to prevent recurrences of such emergencies, in accordance with the guidelines established by The Salvation Army and within the limits of available resources, treating each client in a compassionate, understanding and respectful manner.

c. Advocate on behalf of the client with other agencies and make effective referrals as appropriate.

d. Emphasize acceptance of personal responsibility for client's own behaviors, choices and consequences, building into the client's sense of self-worth the confidence to handle his/her own problems.

e. Assist the Officers in developing new and innovative programs to meet the needs of clients and others in the community with whom we may come into contact. Be constantly aware of areas of service which The Salvation Army may be able to address through direct services or new initiatives.

f. At all times maintain appropriate behavior with clients, and adhere to client confidentiality guidelines.

  1. Complete and maintain client files and documentation. Submit reports, both to The Salvation Army and to other agencies where necessary, both for record-keeping purposes and for client assistance. Assist in smooth function of front office. a. Effectively use computer database, word processing, spreadsheet, and other software in order to maintain client files, client lists and case records on a timely basis.

b. Prepare and submit monthly Statistical Reports as required by schedule in a timely manner. Prepare and submit any other reports which may be necessary either regularly or occasionally. Meet all report dates as required.

c. Prepare a quarterly social service brief for use in Summit Marketing fundraising appeals, corps council, and advisory board meetings. d Learn and effectively use specific computer programs and websites for the purposes of record-keeping and assistance.

e. Maintain a neat and organized file system according to The Salvation Army standards and policies while observing confidentiality

f. As needed, assist with general office duties and phones.

Supervise Social Service employees and programs, manage Social Service resources, budget, and activities. Network with area agencies to further the mission of The Salvation Army in Saginaw County.

a. Supervise and support the work activities of the Social Service Assistant, Pathway of Hope Specialist, and select volunteers as may be required

b. Monitor spending of available funds to best serve the community. Occasionally write grants and complete applications to secure appropriate funding.

c. Manage food and personal needs pantries, including ordering, sorting, rotating, and bagging items for distribution. Provide oversight for smooth operation of such pantries.

d. Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with other community agencies especially the human services network. Maintain a working knowledge of the social services resources in the community and work cooperatively with other agencies within the limitations of client confidentiality.

e. Attend collaboration meetings with other social service agencies in order to work together to best serve the community

Provide oversight, and review to the Pathway of Hope program.

a. Conduct regular outreach to social service client families to identify eligible applicants for the POH program, conducting screening interviews with potential applicants in accordance with POH eligibility guidelines

b. Engage and build rapport with target population.

c. Communicate effectively with Corps Officers, providing support and working to recruit and maintain 10 POH families through each fiscal year. Discuss potential participants with Corps Officer, and Regional POH Coordinator

d. As appropriate, include staff members and Corps Officers to create a strengths-based, all-hands-on-deck approach to engaging POH participants.

  1. Plan and execute seasonal events for the benefit of the community, in cooperation with Corps Officers and other staff.

a. Direct, coordinate, and execute special seasonal social service events around such holidays as Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Back to School, Coats for Kids, or other times of significance to the community. Recommend new services and programs to meet seasonal needs.

b. In cooperation with other staff, plan and conduct occasional food / other needs drives within the community to supplement budgetary needs.

c. Assist Corps Officers in organization, coordination, and implementation of other special activities.

d. Represent The Salvation Army at meetings and as a guest speaker to present The Salvation Army's interests and needs.

  1. Work in coordination with Divisional Headquarters staff to maximize client assistance and efficiency.

  2. Demonstrate the ability and willingness to adhere to The Salvation Army Mission Statement, remaining sensitive to the spiritual needs and issues of clients, guiding clients who may need spiritual counsel to Corps Officers.

OTHER DUTIES:Other duties as assigned by Corps Officers. These duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and or ability required. Education and/or Experience - Must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or equivalent related field experience of minimum 3 years direct client services, be proficient in Microsoft Office products concepts, have working knowledge of spreadsheets, databases, and internet-based systems. Must be able to meet Salvation Army Driver's Qualification standard, and must have a valid State of Michigan Chauffeur License. Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to stay calm in a disorganized environment.

Language Skills - Must have above average oral and written communication skills, must have the ability to give and receive verbal instructions, and must be able to communicate ideas and concepts to clients, staff, and volunteers with patience and compassion. Must have excellent human relation skills and phone etiquette.

Integrity - Must have above average integrity, displaying the ability to keep confidential client information files. Must display an understanding of appropriateness in conversation with clients, maintaining professionality at all times.

Reasoning Ability - Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Physical appearance - Must appear neat, clean, and professional at all times. Must adhere to dress code as stated in The Salvation Army Employee handbook.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee must be able to lift, carry, and move 30 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds infrequently. The employee must be able to climb two flights of stairs frequently hroughout the day.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:General office, classroom and gym environments with low and moderate noise levels. Must be willing and available to work flexible hours, weekends and evenings as needed.
