Job Description:

The Education Specialist coordinates, facilitates and supports staff education and responds to assessed educational needs. Responsibilities include orientation of new nursing personnel, in-service education, continuing education and career development and coordinating academic affiliations. [ "The incumbent demonstrates leadership in planning, implementing, evaluation, and improving educational services while ensuring compliance with the Medical Center/VlSN mission and nationally recognized standards. The Education Specialist executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care. The incumbent provides leadership in the clinical nursing areas while encouraging and fostering participation and involvement in educational programs. Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Demonstrates knowledge of curriculum development including identifying program outcomes, developing competency statements, writing learning objectives and selecting appropriate learning activities and evaluation strategies. Demonstrates skill in the design and use of tools to assess staff learning needs medical center wide and in assigned area. Plans and implements educational activities to address strategic goals, findings from performance improvement activities, expectations of external regulatory agencies. Uses a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate learning in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domain. Reviews and revises education programs to reflect learner needs/outcomes, health care trends, extant research and changes in the health care environment. Incorporates relevant population specific issues in staff education/training provided (e.g. age specific, disease specific, physical, psychosocial changes and their implication for patient care. Participates in identifying and making educational offerings available to staff that address the unique needs of the patient population served. Participates in orienting new nursing personnel/others as appropriate to their role specific duties relevant to the provision of age appropriate, cultural/spiritual care including the recognition, prevention and reporting of patient/elder abuse. Uses knowledge of legal and ethical issues to identify dilemmas, influence policy and model advocacy. Facilitates individual or group analysis and development of proposed resolutions for ethical issues, as assigned.
